Free Clinical Decision Support Tools for Physicians

Clinical decision support tools help physicians apply evidence at the point of care. Here is what to look for — and where to find them free.

What is clinical decision support?

Clinical decision support (CDS) refers to tools and information that help clinicians make better decisions at the point of care. These tools can take many forms: risk calculators, dosing calculators, differential diagnosis generators, drug interaction checkers, and guideline-based decision trees.

The goal of CDS is not to replace clinical judgment — it is to surface relevant evidence and calculations so the clinician can apply it efficiently. A well-designed CDS tool brings the right information to the clinician at the right moment, without requiring them to leave the workflow.

Types of clinical decision support tools

CDS tools fall into several categories:

• Risk calculators — CHA₂DS₂-VASc, CURB-65, FIB-4, ACR TI-RADS, Fleischner Society nodule guidelines • Drug interaction checkers — identify potentially harmful drug combinations • Differential diagnosis generators — help broaden the differential based on presenting symptoms • Guideline-based pathways — walk the clinician through a decision tree based on published guidelines • Dosing calculators — weight-based, renal-adjusted, and pediatric dosing • Lab and imaging reference ranges — quick lookup without leaving the workflow

Why cost matters

Many clinical decision support tools are locked behind expensive institutional licenses. A hospital may pay hundreds of thousands of dollars annually for a CDS platform — and individual clinicians in training, in small practices, or in resource-limited settings may not have access.

This creates a gap: the clinicians who could benefit most from point-of-care evidence may be the least able to afford it. Free, verified CDS tools — available on web and mobile — help close that gap.

Where to find free CDS tools

Medgram provides a suite of clinical decision support tools free for verified medical professionals. These include the Clinical Model Lab (risk calculators for breast imaging, thyroid nodules, pulmonary nodules, liver fibrosis, and adrenal incidentalomas), a medication review tool with FDA label evidence, an ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS and HCPCS code lookup answered from the official CMS files, lab reference ranges, a medical dictionary, and a differential diagnosis generator.

All tools are accessible from the web app and the EHR-side browser extension, so the clinician can use them without leaving the EHR workflow.
